After over 20 years in the industry, I have only missed one function, but had plenty of time to ask one of my longtime associates to literally stand in my place. I had foot surgery and was told to stay off my foot for 72 hours. I missed one of my Sunday pool parties that I do every year. In a worst case scenario, if I could not even get out of bed, I have associates who know who to contact, what to fax to them, and will make a personal call to you, because I can't. Best of all she keeps me healthy and sees to it that I honor all my commitments. I have done weddings where I have been under the weather, but still mentally sharp. One time I lost my voice and the bride's Uncle Frank, was more than happy to do the introductions, I assisted him with the music. I have help many others in a problem situation and have a few favors owed to me.
I budget enough time to setup before everyone arrives. Usually my goal is to be there 1-1/2 hours before the start of the event. This allows plenty of slack time for bad traffic, detours, and I don't need to rush, so accidents have never been a factor. Getting lost is rare, since I know the area well, due to over 20 years of traveling the City and Suburban areas. It takes me about 20 minutes to set up my equipment once I am in the room. After it is sound checked, I change into my tuxedo or other professional attire.
Yes! I have a trailer full of extra equipment that is not too far away after we are fully set up. But I have never really needed them. The most common breakdown is in cords, power and sound cables. I have over 200 feet of extension cords and twice as many speaker cables needed. Plus I'm always prepared with a few extra patch cords to connect the CD players to the mixer and amplifiers. Most of the key songs are duplicated with the advent of CD burning. I love my CDs, but if a CD skips when I listen in my headphones, I'll play the duplicate copy or another song.
I have a lot of faith in a few select DJ friends of mine, and I always want to help a client. I don't like to book more than one event per day, but I can assist you in finding someone that will provide you with a similar type of service.
